The Soroptimist Youth Forum is an annual event that provides an
opportunity for our young people to come together in a structured
environment in order to share their experiences, express opinions, learn
different facets of society, to discuss under professional guidance the
issues of today and to offer possible solutions to the Youth Forum
topic.
The format will be:
Students will debate on an individual basis rather then as a school
team.
The
Youth Forum topic is:
"Countdown to November!”
The criteria they
will be judged on:
- Ability to
perceive and solve problems
- Originality of
ideas and solutions offered
- Persuasiveness
without taking over the group
- Ability to
maintain objectivity and limit comments to the assigned topic
- Clarity of
thought and ability to summarize findings
- Congeniality with
peers.
Students are not
provided with forum questions prior to the event. They should however,
be prepared to discuss political topics as they relate to political
parties, current political candidates, issues relevant to this year’s
election, lobbyists and special interest parties and the Electoral
College. Students may bring note cards with researched information to
aid them in the presentation of their original thoughts and ideas.
Students will also be afforded valuable information relevant to the
forum’s topic by two guest speakers in the political arena.
Soroptimist will present awards of $500.00, $300.00 and $200.00
consecutively, to first through third place winning students, per the
judges’ decision. The awards will be presented to the students at the
Soroptimist Awards Banquet at the Seaford Golf and Country Club in May
of 2008.
